Why Vacations are Important For Your Business

“When was the last time you took a vacation?” As business owners, we work hard day in and day out to make sure that our businesses are thriving. We stay up late into the night working on projects, we rush off early in the morning before anyone is awake because of meetings, and then come home exhausted at night with barely enough energy to spend some quality family time. Take a break! That’s what vacations are for. A vacation will do wonders for your mental health as well as your physical health so don’t think that taking one week off from being overwhelmed by work will cause any harm to your business – it won’t!

Personally, I’m one of the worst about taking a day off of work. I sometimes work six days a week, focusing on the backend of everything that needs to be done. There have even been times that I’ve had a medical procedure and still tried to work the same day. My husband and I have had many long talks about how hard I work – not including taking care of kids, the nonprofit board of directors that I am on, and the books that I’m writing. Even so, many of my vacation days this year have been used for medical reasons.

Last year, though, I took a break from work and went to North Carolina with my family. It was a 16-hour drive with three kids in the car, but driving there and back was such a relaxing experience for me. (I love driving.) Being able to spend a week seeing family was just the break that I needed. I didn’t get on my laptop or answer phone calls. Of course, I couldn’t help but pass out my business card to a couple of people – but I didn’t do any actual work. My mind was focused on enjoying the experience.

When I got back from NC, I was refreshed and ready to hit the ground running. Sure, I had to catch up on almost 200 emails and be brought up to speed on where things were at. But the vacation was just what I needed to come back with a new set of eyes and a calm mind. Taking vacations every once in a while is good for the mind, body, and soul. You will come back refreshed with new ideas to take your business or life to the next level. Take some time to step back, relax, and enjoy the life around you!
