The Slap Heard Round the World

On March 27, 2022, the Oscars presented numerous award, hosted many of the hottest names in entertainment, and was the stage for “The Slap Heard Round the World.” In case you missed it, comedian Chris Rock made a distasteful joke at the expense of Jade Pinkett-Smith, wife of actor Will Smith. Immediately after, Will Smith walked up onto the stage and slapped Chris Rock, yelling, “Keep my wife’s name out your f—ing mouth!”

Some viewers became extremely upset by the fact that the assault happened without consequences. If it was anyone who wasn’t a celebrity, they would have been carted off by the police for assault, right? Or, at the least, be escorted off property. But that didn’t happen. Will Smith just turned around, walked off stage, and sat right back down in his seat next to his wife. Some viewers even claimed that it had to be fake / staged, since nothing came of it.

But everything in life has consequences.

The Academy held an investigation and determined, on April 8, that Will Smith is to be banned from the Oscars and all other Academy-hosted functions for the next ten years. This is following his resignation from his Academy membership on April 1. In the official statement, they say, “The Board has decided, for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, included but not limited to the Academy Awards.”

The moral of the story: No matter how secure you may feel in your position, there are always consequences to your actions.
