2020 has been a trying year, to say the least. Sometimes, I wonder how we even made it to August.

In case you missed it, my resolution for this year was to take better care of myself. It’s been difficult for me, particularly this year, but I’ve been doing my best. One of the small goals that I made was to get back to meditation. I haven’t been great at it but I’m doing better than I was before – so that’s a plus!

Research has shown all sorts of physical changes that happen thanks to meditation, which help both your physical and mental health. Meditation improves cardiovascular health, decreases depression, and assistants several other ailments. It brings your mind to the present and increases your focus. It can even help smokers quit. And while many people associate meditation with new-age hippies, the history of meditation actually dates back to 1500 BCE.

Now, what does any of this have to do with business?

Companies who offer meditation classes or training are giving their employees the chance to change their lives, even if only in minor ways for some. But employees who meditate can change their companies in big ways. Think of it this way: businesses which provide meditation training…

  • can have lower insurance costs due to better health and fewer smokers;
  • have employees with less sick days; and
  • have better customer service, thanks to employees regularly being in a better mood

Providing any type of assistance or service to your employees shows that you care about their wellbeing. That kind of loyalty to your employees will create a sense of loyalty and company pride from them, too. Take care of your people and they will take care of you.
